The Science of Touch:

Evidence-Based Insights into Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage) for Well-being - Part 1

As an Ayurvedic practitioner, I consider it essential to communicate the significance of Abhyanga and to reference supporting publications. With 24 years of experience as a Medical Scientist, my methodology is informed by scientific principles, and I consistently substantiate my blog articles and services with credible evidence. Ayurveda is an ancient discipline that requires time and study to fully appreciate; however, its authenticity and depth are often misunderstood. Therefore, I am committed to providing clear, evidence-based information regarding the benefits of Abhyanga. Below, you will find links, abstracts from journal publications, and a brief summary in support of this practice:

Sharma, A., Sugandh, M., Bhardwaj, A., & Gupta, A. (2025). Role of Shirodhara and Abhyanga on serum cortisol in Anxiety – A case report. Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine16(1), 100948. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jaim.2024.100948

This research is a case report investigating the effects of Ayurvedic treatments, specifically Shirodhara (dripping medicated liquid on the forehead) and Abhyanga (oil massage), on Chittodvega (anxiety) and serum cortisol levels in a 50-year-old male.

Summary: The patient presented with chronic anxiety, claustrophobia, and disturbed sleep, despite conventional antidepressant and anxiolytic medication. Over a 7-day treatment period, he received daily Abhyanga with sesame oil and Shirodhara with Dashmool Ksheer.

The study concludes that Abhyanga and Shirodhara were effective in managing the patient's anxiety symptoms and showed observable changes in serum cortisol, suggesting their efficacy in treating Chittodvega.

Vinita Patil, & Vikram Sharma. (2024). Addressing the Aging Process Through the Ayurveda Lifestyle Interventions and Adaptations. International Journal of Ayurveda and Pharma Research, 150–153. https://doi.org/10.47070/ijapr.v12i5.3226

This research paper, "Addressing the Aging Process Through the Ayurveda Lifestyle Interventions and Adaptations," explores the integration of Ayurvedic principles with geriatric care to promote healthy aging.

Summary: The document emphasizes Ayurveda's holistic perspective on the aging process, viewing it as influenced by individual Doshas and lifestyle. It highlights the physiological changes in older adults and common geriatric problems. The research proposes Ayurvedic interventions like Panchakarma (detoxification) and Rasayana (rejuvenation) for managing age-related conditions. Crucially, it details various lifestyle adaptations for healthy aging, including a balanced diet, regular exercise (like yoga), stress management (meditation), adequate sleep, and maintaining daily routines. The ultimate goal is to provide comprehensive, personalized care that enhances the quality of life and overall well-being of elderly individuals by combining ancient wisdom with modern healthcare practices.
